Detection of Pine Shoot Beetle (PSB) Stress on Pine Forests at Individual Tree Level using UAV-Based Hyperspectral Imagery and Lidar

Abstract: In recent years, the outbreak of the pine shoot beetle (PSB), Tomicus spp., has caused serious shoots damage and the death of millions of trees in Yunnan pine forests in southwestern China. It is urgent to develop a convincing approach to accurately assess the shoot damage ratio (SDR) for monitoring the PSB insects at an early stage. Unmanned airborne vehicles (UAV)-based sensors, including hyperspectral imaging (HI) and lidar, have very high spatial and spectral resolutions, which are very useful to detect fo… Show more

“…The use of LiDAR equipped drones has also been reported in the literature for a wide range of vegetation monitoring applications; ranging from forestry [55,104,105] to agricultural [80,88,106] applications. They come with a higher precision global positioning system (GPS) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) and offer promising results.…”

“…Manohar and Bharat [42] used mobile laser scanning and a three-dimensional modeling approach for the detection of trees along roads. Qinan Lin et al [43] detected a pine tree's health status using the 3D tree model created employing a combination of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and hyperspectral imaging. Mobile laser scanning has wide application in forest inventory [44].…”

“…In other words, regarding the visual effects, it is relatively easy to distinguish the different levels of damaged trees. Lin et al [66] used UAV-based hyperspectral imagery and Lidar to detect shoot damage in pine forests. They investigated the SDRs in September, during the shoot damage stage.…”
