Detection of outer raceway bearing defects in small induction motors using stator current analysis

Abstract: We investigate the application of induction motor stator current spectral analysis (MCSA) for detection of rolling element bearing damage from the outer raceway. In this work, MCSA and vibration analysis are applied to induction motor to detect outer raceway defects in faulty bearings. Data acquisition, recording, and fast fourier transform (FFT) algorithms are done by using the LabVIEW programming language. Experimental results verify the relationship between vibration analysis and MCSA, and identify the pres… Show more

“…The literature describes various ways of bearing current diagnostics. Some researchers [1] point toward the difficulty of detecting rolling bearings' defects by IMs' current. The difficulty is caused by the dominating current component having the network frequency several times exceeding the components caused by certain defects.…”

“…Besides spalling, contaminant particles can lead to other damage mechanisms, such as scuffing, originated from the lubricant starvation in the inlet of the contact zone. Onel et al [13] have dealt with the detection of outer raceway defects in bearings. Experiments are presented using motor current signature analysis, which clarifies some of the factors that may affect the detection of outer race defects of ball bearings by applying fast Fourier transform to the stator current.…”

“…An alternative is the motor current signature analysis (MCSA) since it only requires current measurements. In the case of the MCSA, the use of the Fourier Transform provides current signal spectrum information as a function of frequency for fault detection [20]. The spectral characteristic analysis is used for fault detection in multi-agent systems [21], [22].…”
