Lightweight refractory linings for industrial furnaces have become important subjects of development in high‐temperature industries. The reaction mechanism between a lightweight microporous alumina‐based refractory material and molten steel was investigated in this study. The main mechanism of refractory damage was structural spalling, caused by steel penetrating the pores. The many micropores in lightweight microporous alumina have high specific surface area and reactivity, inducing the formation of FeO–Fe2O3–Al2O3 phases. This impeded the further penetration of molten steel and the direct dissolution of refractory oxides, promoting greater resistance to molten steel than that shown by common tabular alumina‐based refractories, in which Fe does not react and steel penetration through the pores cannot be retarded.

In the current study, the entrapment of inclusions by hooks under electromagnetic brake (EMBr) is investigated through hook reveal and inclusion detection at the subsurface of slabs. Simulation is performed to present the fluid flow and the temperature at the meniscus of the mold. With the application of EMBr in the simulation, the steel jet from the submerged entry nozzle (SEN) deflected upward, the speed of upper backflow increased, and the temperature of steel at the meniscus also increased. The measured average depth of hooks and the number density of >10 μm inclusions without EMBr are larger than those with EMBr. With the application of EMBr, the high temperature of the liquid steel at the meniscus prevented the growth of hooks, and small hooks could only capture few inclusions. Hence, the surface quality of slabs could be improved with EMBr.

Determination of Alloying and Impurity Elements from Matrix and Inclusions from a Process Sample of a Double Stabilized Stainless Steel

The determination of alloying and impurity elements was performed from a stainless steel matrix and inclusions in process samples. An electrolytic extraction method was applied for the separation of inclusions using two different but commonly used electrolytes, 10% HCl and 10% acetylacetone in methanol. The elemental analyses were performed using atomic absorption spectrometry. The elements of interest were aluminum, arsenic, copper, vanadium, titanium and chromium. The aluminum containing inclusions were imaged using a field emission scanning electron microscope. The results for copper and chromium in both electrolytes, vanadium in 10% HCl electrolyte and arsenic in 10% acetylacetone electrolyte were in good agreement with industrial data. Titanium and aluminum were measured from the dissolved steel matrix but titanium was also detected in the inclusions. It was concluded that the analytical results for titanium and aluminum measured using an optical emission spectrometer is affected by the inclusions within the stainless steel.
