Detection of Muscle Activation during Resistance Training Using Infrared Thermal Imaging

Abstract: Infrared thermal imaging has been widely used to show the correlation between thermal characteristics of the body and muscle activation. This study aims to investigate a method using thermal imaging to visualize and differentiate target muscles during resistance training. Thermal images were acquired to monitor three target muscles (i.e., biceps brachii, triceps brachii, and deltoid muscle) in the brachium while varying the training weight, duration, and order of training. The acquired thermal images were segm… Show more

“…Although traditional SGB has achieved good results in the treatment of pain, it also has some drawbacks, for example, the operation is obviously empirical and the treatment effect is greatly affected by the operator himself [ 15 ]. In order to improve the safety of treatment, the process of using SG intubation and pumping anesthetic drugs under the real-time guidance of ultrasound not only accurately guides and locates the patient's drug delivery site but also avoids vascular damage and nerve damage during the puncture process and avoids the occurrence of intravascular drug injection accidents [ 16 ]. In addition, the continuous administration of analgesia pump can continuously deliver drugs around the nerves, and at the same time, it can control the dosage of drugs and realize personalized medicine.…”

“…To this end, he aimed to study a method of using thermal imaging to visualize and distinguish target muscles during resistance training. During the experiment, he segmented and converted the obtained thermal images into thermal maps and then generated differential thermal maps from paired thermal maps [8].…”

“…Therefore, much research has been conducted to evaluate the relationship between muscle activation and muscle contraction. [6][7][8]14,15 One of the most common methods to gain information about muscle is measuring electromyography signal (EMG). Nevertheless, the EMG test requires either skin-adherent or needling electrodes to acquire data, which is not suitable for monitoring muscle activities during applications in training.…”

“…7 Jung, et al employed infrared thermal images and heat maps to detect muscle activation. 8 Another study was carried out to examine the correlation between a metric called resistance training density and a marker of metabolic stress. 9 However, these methods still presented some drawbacks due to the time-consuming procedure and special requirements of equipment.…”
