Detection of Meningioma in Dura Mater by Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract: Radical tumor resection is the treatment of choice for patients suffering from meningioma. However, recurrence of these tumors is a problem. Tumor recurrences are attributed to residual nests of meningioma within the regional dura. Therefore, complete removal of all tumor-infiltrated dura is important. Meningioma and normal dura were studied by Raman microspectroscopy to assess the possibility of developing an in vivo Raman method for guidance of meningioma resections. Pseudocolor Raman maps were constructed o… Show more

“…Examples of clinical use of Raman spectroscopy being actively investigated are areas such as the evaluation of potentially detrimental pathogens (29), tissue foreign body (30), dental disease (31), and cancers (32,33). Clearly, the utility of Raman spectroscopy within human diseases has great potential, but certain obstacles must be overcome.…”

“…The hallmarks of SCI are cell death, demyelination, and aggregation of GAGs and CSPGs. Peak assignments were made based exclusively on the literature pertaining to Raman spectroscopy of the central nervous system (brain tissue), 22 GAGs, 10,23 CSPGs, 23,24 cholesterol, 22,25 and blood. 26 These are listed in Table 1.…”
