In the investigation of suspected lung cancer bleomycin labelled with cobalt-57 and gallium-67 labelled with citrate are currently used to detect the primary tumour and to establish the presence of metastases in the lung hilum and mediastinum. A comparative study of these radiopharmaceuticals was performed in 63 patients with proved lung cancer. 57Co-bleomycin showed the primary tumour in 58 patients (92%) and 67Ga-citrate in 34 (54%) (p < 0 01). The average tumour-to-lung ratio was 3 4 with 57Co-bleomycin and 1 5 with 67Ga-citrate.

Proton induced reactions / Electrolytic deposition / Chemical separation / Excitation function / Integral yield SummaryExcitation functions for the independent formation of 55 Co, 56 Co, 57 Co, 56 Ni and "Ni in the interactions of protons with 58 Ni were measured radiochemically from their respective thresholds up to 45 MeV. Thin samples were prepared by electrolytic deposition of 99.87% enriched 58 Ni on a Au-backing. For measurements of 56 Co and "Co an immediate radiochemical separation via anionexchange chromatography was necessary to eliminate the contributions originating from the decay of 56 Ni and "Ni. Integral yields of the above mentioned radionuclides were calculated from the measured excitation functions of 58 Ni(p,x) processes. Over the optimum energy range of E p = 15 -<• 7 MeV the theoretically expected 55 Co-yield amounts to 14.3 MBq/μΑΙι and the level of "Co impurity to 0.5%. The production of "Co, on the other hand, is possible without any 56 Co impurity over the energy range of E p = 23 13 MeV; its yield amounting to 1.4 MBq/μΑΙι. The competition between (ρ,ρη) and (p,2p) processes on 58 Ni and the systematics of (p,c) excitation functions on some even mass nickel target isotopes are briefly discussed.

Nuclear reaction / Cross section / Excitation function / Integral yield / Radionuclidic purity / Highly enriched target material / Electrolytic deposition SummaryExcitation functions of 54 Fe(d,n) 5S Co and 54 Fe(d,«) 52g Mn reactions were determined from their respective thresholds up to 13 MeV via the stacked-foil technique using natural as well as 99.85% enriched 54 Fe as target material. Thin samples were prepared by electrolytic deposition of ""Fe or M Fe on a Au-backing. From the measured cross sections the integral yields of 55 Co and 52s Mn were deduced. Due to its very low yield, the 54 Fe(d, a) 52g Mn process is not suitable for production of 52g Mn. The optimum energy range for the production of "Co via the 54 Fe(d, n)-process was found to be E d = 10 ->5 MeV, the 55 Co yield amounting to 32 MBq (0.86 mCi)^Ah and the level of 56 -57 Co impurities to <0.1%. The 54 Fe(d,n) 55 Co process on highly enriched M Fe is thus ideally suited for the production of high-purity 55 Co at a small cyclotron.
