Detection of Listeria species in refrigerated chicken carcasses using Clearview tm and a modified conventional culture method

Abstract: The occurence of Listeria species in refrigerated chicken carcasses was evaluated, comparing the conventional culture methodology of FDA, modified by the introduction of a secondary enrichment step prior plating, and the Clearview TM rapid method (Oxoid, UK Ltd). Forty-eight refrigerated whole chicken carcasses purchased from supermarkets in Florianópolis, SC, Brazil, were analysed. Listeria species occured in 21 (43.7%) samples. Using the Clearview method, 17 (35.4%) samples were positive for Listeria species… Show more

“…Therefore, the four false-negative samples found by LRT could be ascribed to insufficient antigen extraction below the minimum sensitivity of the test due to the small amount of growth in the LEB enrichment step. Similar situation resulted in falsenegative results by LRT due to the insufficient growth was reported by Pelisser et al (2001) for the isolation of Listeria spp. from chicken samples.…”

“…Pode crescer numa temperatura mínima média de 1 °C, significando que pode desenvolver-se em carne refrigerada (MURIANA, 1996;PELISSER, 2001). As amostras de filé de peito cozido de frango (PC) analisadas apresentaram ausência de Listeria monocytogenes durante os 21 dias mantidos a 4 °C, atestando segurança do produto quanto à listeriose.…”

“…The main suggested niches for Listeria species are soil and water although plants, animals (particularly farm animals), and man are also considered as reservoirs of Listeria spp. (Linke et al, 2014;Pelisser, Mendes, Sutherland, & Batista, 2001).…”
