Detection of lead in water at ppt levels using resin-enrichment combined with LIBS-LIF

Abstract: Lead detection is critical for maintaining drinking water safety. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is widely used for elemental analysis, but its sensitivity is reduced in the presence of water. To...

“…The instrument was operated under vacuum or helium rather than in air when low-Z elements were analysed. The reanalysis of lters previously 63 Ni, 237 Np, 239 Pu, 90 Sr, 99 analysed using a benchtop EDXRFS instrument demonstrated comparable performance and gave similar LODs. Differences between measurements pairs was <40% with well-correlated data of r 2 = 0.88-0.99.…”

“…Improved sample pretreatments mean that the LIBS detection of trace elements in water at natural concentrations is becoming closer to being feasible. For example, by preconcentrating Pb in a 5 mL sample onto 0.1 g of a macroporous cation exchange resin with weakly acidic iminodiacetic acid groups, it was possible 90 to detect Pb at concentrations down to 88 ng L −1 using LIBS-LIF interrogation of the resin. This was not quite low enough to detect Pb in canal and tap waters at natural concentrations.…”

“…A paper by Wen and co-workers 149 described the use of an enrichment procedure for the determination of Pb at the ppt level in water samples by LIBS assisted by LIF . A macroporous cation exchange resin was mixed with the water to trap Pb from solution.…”

“…Due to the fact that the sensitivity of traditional LIBS cannot meet the requirements of practical applications, how to improve LIBS analysis sensitivity has become a hot topic for many research groups [7][8][9][10][11]. One of the current studies on increasing the sensitivity is to improve the spectral emission of laser-induced plasma.…”
