Detection of Landfill Leachate Leakage Based on ERT and OCTEM

Abstract: Leakage in the impervious layer of a domestic waste landfill seriously pollutes the soil and groundwater. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out rapid nondestructive leakage location detection. In this research, the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method and the opposing-coils transient electromagnetic method (OCTEM) were used to detect the leakage location. The inversion sections of both methods showed a clear low–middle–high resistivity spectrum in the longitudinal direction that could be used to sp… Show more

“…Lu et al have provided evidence that ERT is a highly effective means of detecting leakage within the impervious layer of a domestic waste landfill. Their research has thus established a novel technical foundation for detecting such leaks within landfills [40]. Martorana employed 3D ERT and induced polarization for the identification of regions with elevated leachate concentration in a waste landfill.…”

“…As a non-invasive technique, geophysical technology can preliminarily detect the geological environment characteristics of study area (Shangguan et al, 2016), and the pollution plumes produced by land ll leachate in ltration (Lu et al, 2023;Lu et al, 2023a;Abbaspour et al, 2000;Porsani et al, 2004;Santos et al, 2006). A valley-type land ll in Hunan Province was taken as an example in this study for the following purposes: (1) geophysical technology would be conducted to detect and determine the pollution range and depth produced by land ll leachate in ltration; (2) the parameters of leachate and groundwater would be determined to assess groundwater quality in studied area; (3) multivariate statistics would be applied to analyze the relationship of various parameters of groundwater and land ll leachate; (4) the risk of groundwater would be evaluated on the human health based on the RBCA model.…”
