Compared with other types of Langmuir probes, 1 segmented probes are arguably the least often used, to diagnose 2 the state of plasma. With linear dimensions of the order of cen-3 timeters, these probes would induce perturbations, which would 4 make them impractical in many laboratory plasma experiments. 5 Their size, and the fact that they consist of several equipotential 6 faces or "segments," from which individual currents are collected, 7 introduces additional complexities in the construction of inference 8 techniques for their characteristics. In this work, we focus on 9 the use of spherical segmented probes mounted on a satellite 10 and present new techniques to infer plasma (ion) densities, flow 11 velocities, and satellite potentials, from currents collected by 12 two segmented probes biased to two different fixed potentials 13 relative to a spacecraft. This is done by carrying out 3-D kinetic 14 self-consistent particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations to compute the 15 response of a probe to space plasma under different environment 16 conditions of relevance to satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO) at 17 low and mid-latitudes. Computed currents and the corresponding 18 known plasma and satellite parameters used as input in the 19 simulations are then used to create a solution library with which 20 regression-based inference models are constructed, following 21 standard machine learning techniques. The models trained with 22 a subset of our synthetic dataset are found to yield excellent 23 agreement with data in distinct validation sets. The models 24 constructed with synthetic data are then applied to in situ 25 measurements made with segmented Langmuir probes mounted 26 on the Proba-2 satellite, and the inferences are compared with 27 densities reported on the Proba-2 data portal. The advantage of 28 our approach is that it readily produces uncertainty margins that 29 are specifically related to the inference technique used.30
