Detection of Intact Lava Tubes at Marius Hills on the Moon by SELENE (Kaguya) Lunar Radar Sounder

Abstract: Intact lunar lava tubes offer a pristine environment to conduct scientific examination of the Moon's composition and potentially serve as secure shelters for humans and instruments. We investigated the SELENE Lunar Radar Sounder (LRS) data at locations close to the Marius Hills Hole (MHH), a skylight potentially leading to an intact lava tube, and found a distinctive echo pattern exhibiting a precipitous decrease in echo power, subsequently followed by a large second echo peak that may be evidence for the exis… Show more

“…Even in space, void structures might be ubiquitous. For example, intact lava tubes have recently been found on the Moon 1 . Moreover, pit structures observed on the surface of comets might be caused by the collapse of internal voids 2 .…”

“…Not only are the materials in extraterrestrial conditions likely to be different than rocks in the Earth, the stresses under which those materials exist will also be very different than on Earth: gravity, rotational forces, temperature regime (including fluctuations and the timing of those fluctuations), photochemical and radiation effects, shock waves from impacts and in situ quakes, and tidal stresses. Lava tubes on the Moon are reported to be far bigger than any known on the Earth (Kaku et al, 2017), most likely as a result of the lower gravitational stresses. Otherwise, the Moon is a very Earth-like body in terms of composition, solar loading (albeit on a different time scale given the lunar day), and orbital characteristics.…”

“…C) Halite is also a rheid, and caves can squeeze shut in a matter of decades. years old (Kaku, et al, 2017). On the scale of most major geologic processes, such as plate tectonics and evolution, caves can span the duration of those events.…”

“…The discovery of lunar lava tube skylights/lunar pits has been a key finding in the last decade, enabled by high spatial resolution views of mare basalts by multiple missions (e.g., [180][181][182]). Several skylights have now been detected, including occurrences in the Mare Tranquillitatis and Marius Hills region (Figure 9).…”
