Detection of infectious bronchitis virus

Abstract: The detection methods for infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) are reviewed. Advantages and disadvantages of available techniques of IBV detection by virus isolation, antigen or genome detection, and serology are discussed. Factors of influence on the level of success in detection of IBV after a disease outbreak are discussed, as are the possibilities and dangers of strain classification by protectotyping, serotyping, epitope-typing and genotyping.

“…For example, the turkey coronaviruses replicate to about 10 4 -fold higher titres in turkey embryos than in chick embryos (Adams & Hofstad, 1971). The chick-embryo titres of the two viruses isolated in this study were similar to those of IBV strains (De Wit, 2000), as were the effects that virus replication had on embryo development. From the third to the fifth passage, the coronaviruses (as confirmed by EM) from the teal and peafowl induced embryo dwarfing, stunting, curling and death, characteristics that are typical of 'field' IBV strains (Clarke et al, 1972;De Wit, 2000).…”

“…As previously discussed in the case of infectious bronchitis (IB) (De Wit, 2000), the selection of the most appropriate test and subsequent interpretation of the results is not a simple matter, because of the lack of scientific data on the performance of individual tests. The situation is further complicated in the case of APV.…”
