High levels of rainfall, tidal flooding, land subsidence, intensified urban development, scarce barren land and a shortage of green open spaces (GOS) are contributing factors to the persistent flooding in Jakarta. Therefore, this study was conducted to map the GOS, built-up, and barren land in the city in order to calculate the biopore infiltration hole (LRB) potential for water infiltration as part of Jakarta's flood mitigation efforts using the Landsat 8 operational land imager (OLI). The Landsat data acquired on September 11, 2019, with path/row 122/064 were processed using the Fast Line-of-Sight Atmospheric Analysis of Spectral Hypercubes (FLAASH) method for the radiometric correction, and geometric correction with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 7.57 meters. Moreover, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was applied to classify the GOS, the normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) for the built-up areas, and the normalized difference barren land index (NDBaI) for barren land areas which were further confirmed using NDBI to distinguish them from the built-up areas. It is also important to note that the LRB potential was calculated by adding the GOS and barren land, dividing the result by the ideal land area multiplied by the ideal number of holes. The results showed that the GOS, built-up area, and barren land were 8.34%, 85.29%, and 2.48%, respectively. Furthermore, the LRB potential through the optimization of GOS and barren land was found to be 70.06 km2 and produced 16,816,248 LRB (18.27% of total needed). The realization of this value is expected to reduce the potential inundation in Jakarta by 15.6%.

Klang Valley is undergoing rapid urbanization. Many cities in Klang Valley are developing to cope with the trend for migration to more urbanized areas. At the current pace and magnitude of urbanization, land expansion is one of the most visible, irreversible forms of land use and land cover change. Thus, Remote Sensing is regarded as an essential tool in these contexts that are important for urban studies and planning. In the past, many studies have relied on optical Remote Sensing rather than synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. Some have argued that SAR is a poor choice because of its speckle noise and requires complex pre-processing, but countries in the tropics, where clouds are a big problem, cannot always rely on optical. The present work utilizes the interferometric coherence method with the C-band datasets acquired from the Sentinel-1 and compares it with the vegetation index method on the SPOT datasets for 2016 and 2021. Once adequately processed and classified, the SAR images resulted in significant textures on urban areas with respect to the map generated from vegetation index of SPOT images. Hence, these findings may prove beneficial in developing an effective urban planning strategy and policy formulation for the Klang Valley.

Batam City is an industrial city and has a total area of 1,570.35 km2 with a land area of 715 km2. Following the economic development and increasing population, the green open space in Batam City is decreasing. The purpose of this research was to analyze the adequacy of Batam’s green open space based on the criteria of Law No. 26 of 2007 concerning Spatial Planning and Minister of Public Works Regulation No. 5 of 2008 concerning Guidelines and Utilization of Green Open Space. This research was conducted with a spatial analysis method based on land cover information from the interpretation of Landsat 8 OLI image recording on 05-06-2018. Based on the results showed that Batam’s green open space is still 221.400 ha or 32.05% from land area. It means, Batam City’s open space is still sufficient at least 30% according to Law No. 26 of 2007 and Minister of Public Works Regulation No. 5 of 2008. The largest type of land cover in green open space is secondary dry land forest, covering 79.200 ha (11.45%). Keyword : Batam City, analysis, green open space.
