Detection of Differential Settlement of Man-Made Structures Coupled with Urban Development by Using Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI)

Abstract: Many cities are prone to land subsidence, particularly due to the overuse of ground water. However, because man-made structures are normally built upon foundations that are stiffer than the surrounding ground, such structures react to land subsidence to a lesser extent. This settlement mismatch between ground and buildings, also known as differential settlement (DS), may cause serious problems in urban management, such as foundation overloading due to down-drag forces and damage to underground pipelines. Here,… Show more

“…MT-InSAR is gaining popularity in the field of monitoring ground and infrastructure displacements, particularly in urban areas, as evidenced by Zhu et al, Susaki et al, and García et al [21][22][23]. Furthermore, its effectiveness was examined in dam monitoring during regular operation [24,25] and in high-risk scenarios, such as seismic events [26] and the dam-filling period [27].…”

“…As important components of human living environments, the long-term health monitoring about urban built-up areas is important to ensure the safety of people and economic development. Land subsidence is common in various parts of the world, such as Rome in Italy, the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, the Noksan in Korea, the Mexico city in Mexico, the Konya Plain in Turkey, and London in the United Kingdom [2][3][4][5][6]. Specifically, it usually happens in many areas of China, such as Shanghai, Tianjin, Hebei, and others [7,8], which has resulted in severe economic losses [9,10].…”

“…4) Slope instability: Instability of the ground beneath a building, causing the structure to tilt or lean [4]. 5) Differential settlement: Uneven settling of different parts of a building, leading to structural damage [5]. 6) Creep: Slow deformation of a building over time due to constant stress [6].…”
