Detection of Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in North-eastern Senegal, Bokidiawé 2019

Abstract: We diagnosed a human case of Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Bokidiawe (North-eastern Senegal), 2019. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the isolate belongs to genotype III and is closely related to a strain reported in Mauritania in 1984 and Spain in 2016. Distribution area of CCHF in Senegal is progressively increasing.

“…Here we describe for the first time the detection of several WNV human cases in Senegal, associated with a strong detection of the virus in the mosquito vector. Indeed, the improvement of arbovirus surveillance in Senegal with the implementation of the 4S system and new diagnostic tools made it possible to highlight the circulation of many arboviruses including dengue, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Rift Valley fever and WNV viruses in humans as well as in arthropods [43,44,65,66]. Before the implementation of the 4S network for arboviruses surveillance, WNV detection in humans was limited to two cases detected in Dakar in 1970 and 1991 [41].…”

“…However, since the implementation of the arbovirus testing in the 4S network in 2015, better detection of many arboviruses including RVFV, Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever virus [ 32 ], Dengue virus [ 33 ], and West Nile virus (unpublished data) has been observed. Indeed, in 2020, 9 RVFV human cases were detected in different areas in Senegal, such as the Fatick, Matam, Saint-Louis, and Dakar regions.…”

“…Epidemiological and environmental data show that Senegal northern regions are the most exposed [ 9 , 10 ]. Additionally, the last human case was reported in 2019 in Bokidiawe (northern Senegal) [ 11 ].…”
