Detection of chromosomes carrying genes for seed dormancy of wheat using the backcross reciprocal monosomic method

Abstract: Preharvest sprouting (PHS) in wheat represents a major constraint to the production of high‐quality grain. Genetic variation for tolerance to PHS is associated with seed dormancy. The present study was initiated to detect homologous chromosome variation associated with seed dormancy genes in a PHS tolerant cultivar ‘Zenkojikomugi’ (Zen) and ‘Chinese Spring’ (CS) using the backcross reciprocal monosomic method. The most striking effect on variation in seed dormancy was associated with chromosome 3A, and followe… Show more

“…These QTLs were derived from white wheat cultivars and are not related to any Red genes; therefore, they can be used to breed white wheat for improved PHS resistance. Several recent studies demonstrated a major QTL for PHS on the short arm of 3A of the Japanese red wheat cultivar Zen (Miura et al 2002;Mori et al 2005;Osa et al 2003), but whether it exists in white wheat remains unknown. In the current study, one major QTL, QPhs.pseru-3AS, was repeatedly detected on chromosome 3A of a white wheat cultivar Rio Blanco.…”

“…Previously, in "Zen", chromosomes carrying genes for grain dormancy were detected in comparison with "CS" homologue by Miura et al (2002). According to their results, chromosome 3B of "Zen" has produced very low germination % although the difference between "CS" and "Zen" was not significant due to the fact that "CS" homologue also produced low germinations.…”

“…According to a previous study of Miura et al (2002), 7B in "Zen" was identified as a possible site for the availability of dormancy genes. Hence, it can be speculated that chromosome 7B might contain important genes affecting grain dormancy validating the QTL detected on 7B of the present study in "Zen" x "Spica" cross.…”

“…O principal componente da variação genética da germinação na pré-colheita de trigo parece ser o grau de dormência, que necessita ser avaliado como mecanismo de possível transferência para outros cultivares (Flintham, 2000;Bassoi, 2002;Miura et al, 2002;Osa et al, 2003). Assim, a identificação de cultivares tolerantes à germinação na espiga pode ser uma importante ferramenta na seleção de genótipos para os programas de melhoramento genético em trigo.…”
