Detection of Chlamydia trachomatis endocervical infection in asymptomatic and symptomatic women: Comparison of deoxribonucleic acid probe test with tissue culture

Abstract: A deoxyribonucleic acid probe assay (PACE 2, Gen-Probe, San Diego) was compared with a standard tissue culture method for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis endocervical infection in both asymptomatic and symptomatic women. The results of the probe test were expressed as a ratio of relative light units of the specimen per relative light units of the cutoff recommended by the manufacturer. Samples with sample/cutoff ratios near 1.0 were repeated until two or more consistent ratios were obtained. A total of 426 … Show more

“…Screening for chlamydia is recommended because 56% to 80% of persons with infections do not experience symptoms. [10][11][12] During the past decade, more sensitive and specific screening tests that are technically easier to perform have become available. 13 Effective antimicrobial drug therapy is available, with cure rates of 97% for a 7-day course of doxycyline costing $2 to $8.…”

“…A previous study, which used isolation in Mc-Coy cells in 96-well microtiter plates with subpassage as the reference method, showed a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 96% for the MicroTrak EIA with endocervical specimens obtained from a high-prevalence (14%) female population (9). In five studies comparing PACE 2 with culture, the sensitivities for the probe assay ranged from 86.1 to 93% and the specificities ranged from 97.7 to 100% (12, [14][15][16]28). Several factors, including patient characteristics and infection prevalence (2,8,13,17,27) as well as differences in specimen collection (19) and culture techniques (1,13,25,27,29), may affect test performance.…”
