Detection of characteristic points of impedance cardiogram and validation using Doppler echocardiography

Abstract: Impedance cardiography is a noninvasive technique for monitoring the variation in thoracic impedance during cardiac cycle. Estimation of the stroke volume and other cardiovascular indices using impedance cardiography requires error-free detection of characteristic points in the impedance cardiogram (ICG). A technique for automatic detection of ICG characteristic points using R peaks in ECG as reference is presented. It does not require pre-processing of the ICG signal for baseline correction and adjustment of … Show more

“…The feature points B, C, X (Fig. 1) were determined by a very simple algorithm [12]: C as maximum (extremum over ca 50% of the peak value threshold), B as the first zero-crossing to the "left" from the C and X as the global minimum between two C points. The Z, dZ/dt and ECG with estimated B, C, X points of ICG (on dZ/dt plots) are shown in Fig.…”

“…In numerous studies wavelet transform were used in order to detect characteristic points. A common feature of these methods is the need for synchronisation of the analyzed rheogram with the ECG signals, echocardiographic or phonocardiogram [ 21 , 22 , 23 ].…”

“…Alternatively the B-point has been suggested to take as some local minimum [2] further left from the zero-crossing ("below the zero"), so giving little bit increased value for LVET interval (and related CO and SV values). As another alternative, it has been proposed to move the B-point by applying instead of zero-crossing the crossing at the 15% level between the base-line (close to zero, in practice) and peak value [11].…”
