Detection of carbapenemase production in Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas species by carbapenemase Nordmann–Poirel test

Abstract: PURPOSE: Multidrug-resistant organisms causing community-acquired and hospital-acquired infections are increasing at a dangerous rate. Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas species are an important source of concern since these organisms are not only resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics but also show cross-resistance to other groups of antibiotics. In the present study, rapid detection of these carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas species by carbapenemase Nordmann–Poi… Show more

“…Different phenotypic approaches are employed for the diagnosis of CPE, including the modified Hodge test (MHT), Blue-Carba test and Rapidec CARBA NP test. The Rapidec CARBA NP test is a biochemical assay with a good sensitivity and specificity, but it cannot differentiate among types of carbapenemases [ 7 , 11 ]. This test is also recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) [ 12 ].…”

“…The dread of extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESβL) enzyme to get new ability for developing antimicrobial resistance and multidrug-resistant (MDR) mechanisms, in Morganella morganii which was formed about 4.1% of whole wound infections and Pseudomonas aeruginosa which is causative agent for post-surgery wound infections and is considered as an important pathogen of both community and hospital acquired infections, and the ability to cause infections as Carbapenemase and MDR agents, also could be important source of concern since these organisms are not only resistant to betalactam antibiotics but also show cross-resistance to other groups of antibiotics [8,10,20] (Table 4…”

“…To establish carbapenemase-production in the isolates included in the study, the isolates were subjected to the modified Hodge test (MHT) and the modified carbapenem-inactivation method (mCIM), optimized for P. aeruginosa, as previously described (Chou et al 2020;Pitout et al 2008;Rao et al 2019). In both assays, MER disks (10 µg; Oxoid, Basingstoke, UK) were utilized and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 was used as an indicator organism.…”
