Detection of breast cancer using non-invasive X-ray diffraction technique of hair: A preliminary study

Abstract: Background: An early diagnosis of breast cancer relates directly to an accurate treatment plan and strategy. Early detec on of breast cancer before its development would be a significant reduc on of morbidity and mortality rates. The aim of this preliminary study is to inves gate the sensi vity of Wide Angle X-ray diffrac on (WAXRD) method on women hair samples of healthy and breast cancer pa ents in comparison with other modali es such as synchrotron based XRD beam and mammography. Materials and Methods: Hair… Show more

“…Some recent advances involving the use of structural proteomics as tools to identify disease biomarkers in hair are emerging. For instance, a noninvasive method of breast cancer detection in patient hair using a non‐synchrotron based X‐ray diffraction method has been described . Interestingly, Fourier transformed infra‐red spectroscopy has also been used to identify breast cancer specific lipid changes .…”

“…So, early detection of this type of neoplasm is vital and helps the medical staff for choosing the best treatment strategy and planning ( 3 , 4 ). Nowadays, mammography is the gold standard and best modality for diagnose or screening the breast cancer, which helps the physician for early detection of this type of cancer ( 2 ). Many studies have noted that, in addition to patient discomfort and the imposed radiation hazards, false negative reports of mammography may lead to misdiagnosis of breast cancer ( 5 ).…”
