Detection of Bone Metastases in Breast Cancer (BC) Patients by Serum Tartrate-Resistant Acid Phosphatase 5b (TRACP 5b), a Bone Resorption Marker and Serum Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), a Bone Formation Marker, in Lieu of Whole Body Skeletal Scintigraphy with Technetium99m MDP

Abstract: Four groups of samples were analysed. 1st group consists 52 normal female (cancer free women), 2nd group consists 38 BC patients without bone metastasis, 3rd group consists 27 breast cancer patients with limited bone metastasis (3 or less than 3 skeletal lesions) and 4th group consists 35 breast cancer patients with extensive bone metastasis (4 or more than 4 skeletal lesions), conformed by whole body skeletal scintigraphy with Technetium99m MDP. One way ANOVA was used to compare serum TRACP5b and serum ALP am… Show more

“…Serum TRACP‐5b is normally secreted by osteoclasts during the process of bone resorption and used as a bone resorption marker [Sarvari et al, ; Wu et al, ; D'Oronzo et al, ; Kuo and Chen, ]. TRACP‐5b is extensively used and has revealed good specificity and high sensitivity in comparison with other bone biomarkers [Kuo and Chen, ].…”

“…ALP is a hydrolase enzyme responsible for removing phosphate groups from many types of molecules, including nucleotides, proteins, and alkaloids (32). ALP increases during active bone formation, as ALP is a byproduct of osteoblast activity (heightened levels of which appear in Paget's disease) (33).…”

“…However, the high expenditure and the radiation for patients due to repeat using BS for continuous evaluation of bone metastases can’t be ignored 4 . Thus, improving knowledge about the clinical characteristics and identification of the risk factors for bone metastases in breast cancer patients is important for early diagnosing and treatment.…”
