Detection of bacteremia by Difco ESP blood culture system

Abstract: In a multicenter study, the Difco ESP blood culture system (Difco Laboratories, Detroit, Mich.) was compared with the BACTEC NR660 system (Becton Dickinson Diagnostic Instrument Systems, Sparks, Md.). The ESP system monitors each blood culture bottle every 12 to 24 min to detect changes in oxygen consumption and gas production by microbes. Equal volumes of blood were inoculated into aerobic ESP-80A and BACTEC 6A, 16A, or PEDS Plus broths and anaerobic ESP-80N and BACTEC 7A or 17A broths and were incubated for … Show more

“…One of the most important functions of the microbiology laboratory is the rapid and accurate detection of microorganisms in the blood. In the last several years, new, automated, continuous-monitoring blood culture systems have been developed, evaluated, and reported in the literature (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). One such system is the BACTEC 9240 (Becton Dickinson Diagnostic Instrument Systems, Sparks, Md.…”

“…the first clinical evaluation of ESP, Morello et al(114) compared ESP with the BACTEC NR660 blood culture system. ESP aerobic bottles recovered significantly more Streptococcus pneumoniae and all microorganisms combined, whereas ESP anaerobic bottles recovered significantly more aerobic gram-positive bacteria, Candida spp., and all microorganisms combined.…”
