Detection of Antibody and Antigen for Lassa Virus Nucleoprotein in Monkeys from Southern Nigeria

Abstract: Lassa fever is a deadly viral haemorrhagic fever caused by Lassa Virus (LASV). Rodents, especially, Mystomys natalensis , are the known reservoirs of LASV and humans are the defined hosts. Monkeys share many illnesses with humans and experimental LASV infections in monkeys are fatal but natural LASV infection of monkeys has not been reported. Serum samples obtained between August 2015 and December 2017 from 62 monkeys belonging to six species in Southern Nigeria were tested for LASV as p… Show more

“…19 In 2019, Ogunro et al reported LASV-specific IgG in 8.1% of monkeys from Southern Nigeria. 20 In Southern Mali, a 6.3% seroconversion rate for LASV IgG antibodies was reported in humans. 21 In addition, Sogoba et al demonstrated a seroprevalence of 14.5–44% of human LASV infection in each of the three villages investigated in Southern Mali.…”

“…A suite of Lassa fever diagnostic immunoassays has been developed based on LASV recombinant proteins, including antigen-IgG-and IgM-capture ELISA and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) [39][40][41][42][43] . The antibody-capture ELISA has demonstrated the capability to detect IgM seropositivity and subsequent class-switching to IgG seropositivity in Lassa fever cases 41 and has proven useful in surveillance and vaccine studies 30,[44][45][46][47] . These prior assays were configured with recombinant antigens based on the lineage IV LASV Josiah strain 39 .…”

“…LASV exposure, which is defined as the contact with the virus, can be assessed by the presence of LASV-specific antibodies in the blood ( 27 ). We used the Blackbox LASV IgG Kit from Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Germany ( https://www.bnitm.de ) for qualitative serologic detection of acute or past LASV infection ( 28 , 29 ).…”
