Detection of antibodies to Candida albicans germ tubes for diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of invasive candidiasis in patients with hematologic malignancies

Abstract: We prospectively investigated the ability of detection of antibodies to Candida albicans germ tubes (CAGT) to diagnose invasive candidiasis in 95 consecutive admissions of 73 patients with hematologic disorders undergoing intensive chemotherapy. The episodes were divided into three groups according to clinical and microbiological diagnosis. Group 1 comprised eight admissions of eight patients with invasive candidiasis. Group 2 comprised 42 admissions of 34 patients without evidence of invasive candidiasis. Gro… Show more

“…Diagnostic accuracy strongly depends on the patients who were studied, and may thus differ in other clinical settings. Fourth, our exclusion criterion used to avoid overestimation/underestimation of the diagnostic/prognostic accuracy of the index test (given the association between anti-Candida antibody detection and antifungal therapy [18,71]) may also limit the generalizability of our results. Finally, the specificity of anti-Eno1p IgG antibodies in patients with other types of candidiasis (e.g.…”
