Detection of Anti-LeishmaniaImmunoglobulin G Antibodies in Urine Specimens of Dogs with Leishmaniasis

Abstract: For years, anti-Leishmania immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies have been detected in the sera of dogs living in areas of leishmaniasis endemicity. They have also been found in the aqueous humor and cerebrospinal fluid. In contrast, a review of the literature failed to identify the detection of anti-Leishmania antibodies in urine samples from dogs with leishmaniasis. “…However, obtaining blood can be difficult in the prevailing field conditions especially in children. Moreover, it has been reported that kidney impairment occur during the acute infection with leishmania and antibodies have been detected in urine in patients with VL 9, 10, 11 . The high sensitivity and specificity of rk39 serology with strip format and presence of immunoglobulin in the urine encouraged us to use urine, which can be acquired non-invasively and easy to obtain, for the diagnosis of Kala-azar.…”

“…13,29,32,38 The works by Brandtzaeg and others 39 and Roitt and Lehner 40 reported that the mean IgG concentration was 14,730 mg/L in serum and 12,500 mg/L in urine. Although several different serological test formats exist for diagnosis of VL, many of them have not been validated in prospective field studies.…”
