“…Eight have now been detected in the expanding shell around the evolved carbon star IRC]10216, four of which are silicon carbides, containing only silicon and carbon : SiC (Cernicharo et al 1989), the linear chain (Ohishi et al 1989), and the two rings SiC 4 SiCC (Thaddeus, Cummins, & Linke 1984) and SiC 3 , the latter the most stable of two planar rhomboidal isomers with that elemental formula recently detected in this laboratory (McCarthy, Apponi, & Thaddeus 1999b ;Apponi et al 1999b). Many more silicon carbides and other silicon molecules almost certainly exist in this and other sources, and a number of these should be detectable with large radio telescopes once laboratory spectra are in hand.…”
