We report on the first outbreak of high pathogenicity H5N1 avian influenza, causing extreme mortality in the southern elephant seal, Mirounga leonina, at Península Valdés (PV) and nearby areas, in Argentina. The virus was confirmed by the Argentine Government Animal Health Service (SENASA) on samples collected from elephant seals at PV. Findings were reported by the national authorities to the World Organisation for Animal Health and are available through the World Animal Health Information System under event ID 5189 (specifically, outbreaks OB_126883 and OB_124986).Field data were collected from three sampled areas at PV, encompassing about 20 km of coastline where seals reproduce. This includes beaches ranging from typically high to low density of animals. A 13-km beach, in a highdensity area at the peak of the 2023 breeding season (October 10), yielded a mortality of 70% of the 1,891 pups born. Comparatively, in 2022, at the same place and about the same time in the breeding season, mortality was 0.8%
