-Isolates of the genera Pasteurella and Mannheimia cause a wide variety of diseases of great economic importance in poultry, pigs, cattle and rabbits. Antimicrobial agents represent the most powerful tools to control such infections. However, increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance may dramatically reduce the efficacy of the antimicrobial agents used to control Pasteurella and Mannheimia infections. This review presents a short summary of the infections caused by Pasteurella and Mannheimia isolates in food-producing animals and the possibilities of preventing and controlling primary and secondary pasteurellosis. Particular reference is given to antimicrobial chemotherapy and the resistance properties of Pasteurella and Mannheimia isolates. The genetic basis of the most predominant resistance properties such as resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, sulfonamides, and chloramphenicol is discussed. This is depicted with reference to the role of plasmids and transposons in the spread of the resistance genes among Pasteurellaceae and members of other bacterial families and genera.

A small plasmid of 3.95 kb, encoding resistance to chloramphenicol (Cm) was detected in three of 33 Staphylococcus hyicus strains. The plasmid in each of the three strains was indistinguishable by Southern-blot hybridization and restriction enzyme analysis. It was shown by curing and by transformation to specify resistance to Cm. A preliminary restriction map of the plasmid, designated pSC2, is presented. Chloramphenicol acetyltransferase was demonstrated by enzyme assay and by SDS-PAGE of cell-free lysates of pSC2 transformants.

Tetracycline resistance genes in staphylococci from the skin of pigs

Forty-seven tetracycline-resistant staphylococci from the skin of pigs were examined for genes mediating this resistance. Seventeen isolates were also resistant to minocycline and all hybridized with the tet(M) gene; 23 carried the tet(K) gene and 10 the tet(L) gene. Three carried more than one gene and two did not hybridize with any of the three probes tested. Maps were constructed for two plasmids carrying the tet(K) gene, all were very similar in size (4.35-4.7 kb) and structure and closely resembled the plasmid pT181. Four plasmids which bore the tet(L) gene differed in size, ranging from 4.3 to 11.5 kb, and were dissimilar in structure except for the portion bearing the gene.
