Detection and immunochemical characterization of a primate type C retrovirus-related p30 protein in normal human placentas.

Abstract: We find that 12 of 14 specimens of normal human term placentas analyzed by one-or two-dimensional electrophoresis and immunoblotting contain a protein or polypeptide of -30,000 daltons that is antigenically cross-reactive with p30 core protein of the simian sarcoma-associated virus/gibbon ape leukemia virus primate retrovirus group and is physicochemically similar to reference murine and primate type C retrovirus p30s. This finding may lead to an understanding of endogenous type C retrovirus gene expression in… Show more

“…Some of these sequences have been reported to be expressed as messenger RNA (16,22,(38)(39)(40) and also, possibly, as protein and particles (41)(42)(43)(44)(45). Antibodies to endogenous retroviruses occur in animals (46)(47)(48)(49), and the same seems to be true in humans (2,3,5).…”

“…Some associations are well known: B-cell immunoglobulinopathies (1); inflammatory diseases of the nervous system (160); autoimmune rheumatic and connective tissue diseases (94,159,180,191); and chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (40). Others have been accorded little recognition even though type C retrovirus particles occur rather abundantly in tissues, i.e., in human reproductive tissues (82,100) and psoriasis lesions (78,79). The aim of this review is to collate and appraise the data bearing on the question of whether HERVs can be implicated in specific disease entities.…”

“…Protein or Western blotting has been used in conjunction with immunological detection methods to investigate antigenic proteins in a number of virus studies (2,5,13). Our results showed that tile HgP0-rabbit anti-pig IgG conjugate and sera from uninfected pigs, non-specifically reacted with some of the blotted AD virus proteins.…”
