Detection and estimation of pulsar signals for navigation

Abstract: The paper focuses on scientific issues related to new application of pulsar signals for airplane-based navigation. A possible algorithm for processing of pulsar signals that consists of epoch-folding, matched filtering and detection is proposed and evaluated in this paper. The algorithm proposed is verified using the real experimental data obtained from the radio observatory Dwingeloo, the Netherland. The serious trouble in this study is that the total number of the input data within a repetition period is muc… Show more

“…Models of pulsars' signals can be created based on the structure of continuous electromagnetic fields emitted by pulsars. Based on radio telescope measurements of pulsar emissions [6,9,10], the signals emitted by pulsars can be regarded as monochromatic if measurements are in signal frequency channel and/or polychromatic if measurements are in multiple frequency channels. The amplitudes of signals can be approximated by Gaussian and rectangular function, whereas the frequency structure as stepped frequency modulated with rectangular amplitude of a single frequency pulse in the burst, linear frequency modulated pulses with Gaussian envelop, etc.…”

“…The MF algorithm calculates the correlation peak for the X-ray pulsar signal's profile with the standard signal template [15]. Since the MF algorithm is optimal when the noise is obeying the Gaussian distribution, we choose the MF algorithm for comparison.…”

“…The Gregory-Loredo method is effective on discovering new pulsars when there is no prior knowledge about the signal's shape; however, it does not use the prior information and is less efficient. The other detection algorithms, liketransform [13,14] and Match Filter (MF) [15], consider the noise obeying the Gaussian distribution after epoch folding. However, that happens when the number of photons in the bins of epoch folding is larger than 20 [8].…”

“…Pulsar navigation tracking system based on the Doppler frequency measurement model and pulsar timing and an interplanetary navigation and positioning system using pulsar signals is discussed in [6,7]. The pulsar signal processing algorithm that consists of epoch-folding, matched filtering and detection is presented and evaluated in [8]. A hybrid detection algorithm based on energy and entropy analysis as an approach for spectrum sensing is considered in [9].…”
