Detection and characterization of extended-spectrum  -lactamases in Salmonella enterica strains of healthy food animals in Spain

Abstract: The emergence of ESBL-producing S. enterica isolates among food animals is described for the first time in Spain, with those of the CTX-M group being the predominant ESBLs detected.

“…In Gram-negative bacteria, the qac genes are often linked with plasmid-mediated class 1 integrons which harbour a variety of antibiotic resistance genes (Zhao et al 2012). In Enterobacteriaceae, the qac genes have been most frequently found in combination with genes coding for resistance to aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol, sulphonamides, trimethoprim and β-lactams (Poirel et al 2000;Riano et al 2006;Espedido et al 2008;Zhao et al 2012). Similar findings were also reported in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Jeong et al 2009;Colinon et al 2010).…”

“…The ESBL-producers represented only 0.09% of the total number of isolates tested ). In another study in Spain among isolates obtained through the Spanish Veterinary-Antimicrobial-Resistance-Surveillance Network (VAV), 4 of 556 (0.7%) Salmonella organisms obtained from faecal samples of healthy food animals (pigs and poultry) at the slaughterhouse level were ESBL producers, representing 0.2% in the case of pigs and 2.5% of all isolates in the case of poultry (Riano et al, 2006). ESBL-producing Salmonella prevalences of 0.5-0.6% were detected in Italy, Korea and Japan Hur et al, 2010;Matsumoto et al, 2007).…”

“…Other ESBLs have been found to be more widely distributed. So far, TEM-52-and SHV-12 producing Enterobacteriaceae, isolated especially from poultry, have only been described on the European continent (Briñas et al, 2003;Chiaretto et al, 2008;Cloeckaert et al, 2007;Costa et al, 2009;Hasman et al, 2005;Machado et al, 2008;Smet et al, 2008;Riaño et al, 2006). ESBLs such as CTX-M-1, CTX-M-2 and CTX-M-14 have been found in many European countries, being associated with E. coli mainly from poultry (Briñas et al, 2003;Costa et al, 2009;Girlich et al, 2007;Jouini et al, 2007;Kojima et al, 2005;Machado et al, 2008;Shiraki et al, 2004;Smet et al, 2008).…”
