BackgroundThe changes of landscape structure and function due to human interference is hastening worldwide, and it is compulsory to preserve biological resources in a protected system. This study aims to measure the landscape ecological structure and the extent of habitat fragmentation in the Bale mountains national park. The land use/land cover change was determined by interpreting the 1985, 1995, 2005 and 2017 Landsat images with ArcGIS 10.3, and the selected landscape structural metrics was analyzed using FRAGSTATS 4.2.1. ResultsAll land cover classes showed a declining trend, except the farmland, and grassland depicted the highest area reduction. From 1985 to 2017 grassland, Erica, forestland, and afro-alpine were decreased by 9.36%, 0.26%, 0.06%, and 0.01%, respectively. Whereas, farmland was increased by 43.67%. The study area was characterized as progressively fragmented since it was signi ed by the escalated value of patch number (40.22%), area-weighted mean shape index (18.84%), and edge density (22.27%) and a declined value of mean patch size (28.68%) and core area (10.60%) over the study period. Considering this result, there was a high loss in area available for core dependent species, particularly for Mountain nyala in the grasslands and woodlands, Ethiopian wolf in afro-alpine regions, and Bale monkey in the bamboo forest. ConclusionBoth forestland and grassland need a conservation priority since these habitats were the most fragmented and habitat lost area.

Fincha watershed is characterized by the presence of large scale government development projects, such as hydroelectric dam and sugarcane plantation. Within this watershed, land use/land cover (LULC) changes and its linkages with ecosystem services were analyzed for a period of more than three decades (1987–2019). The study first assessed LULC dynamics using ArcGIS software with a standard method. After data on LULC change was obtained, the study used a globally developed values coefficients to estimate the Ecosystem Service Values (ESVs) of the study watershed. The findings revealed that; cultivated land, water body, settlement and sugar cane plantation increased at a rate of 579.8 ha/yr, 199.7 ha/yr, 141.2 ha/yr and 137.1 ha/yr, respectively, whereas wetland, forest land and bare land reduced by 600 ha/y, 328.7 ha/yr and 60.3 ha/yr, respectively, for the study period (1987–2019) considered in the watershed. The increase in water body and sugar cane plantation is mainly attributed to large scale government development projects, while the increase in settlement and cultivated land is the result of small scale farming in the area. Both subsistence farming practices and large scale government projects compete on forest land and wetland. This has resulted in the decrease of the total NCV (Natural Capital Value) by 13.2%. The total ecosystem service values were dominated by cultivated land, which contributed 42.9% of the values in 2019. Elasticity of ESV change in relation to LULC showed the dominance of cultivated land in the overall values of the natural capital. To optimize the values of natural capital at the watershed, making synergies and tradeoffs between land uses is vital by all concerned stakeholders involved in modification of the land uses.

To monitor land-use/land-cover (LULC) change and assess its impact on the soil property, the availability of benchmark data is indispensable, which is hardly available in the intensively cultivated regions of developing countries. Our study attempts to solve this problem by generating a benchmark soil data through the development of modified spatial analogue (MSA) method in the context of the Upper Dijo River catchment, south-central Ethiopia. The magnitude and patterns of LULC changes were extracted from air photos and satellite imageries, along with the acquisition of soil samples from the reference and target sites through ground survey. Analysis of digital image processing shows significant LULC changes in a period that spanned three decades. The impact of LULC change on soil quality was assessed by comparing the soil physico-chemical properties sampled from the reference and target sites. The result shows a decline in total nitrogen, organic matter, available potassium and pH levels in soils collected from target sites, which conforms to results reported by studies conducted in data-rich environment. With careful validation, MSA could be useful for monitoring soil property changes in data-scarce environment and generate soil-related parameters for agro-ecological models.
