Detecting ultrasonographic hollowness in small choroidal melanocytic tumors using 10 MHz and 20 MHz ultrasonography: a comparative study

Abstract: UH is easier to detect by 20 MHz than by 10 MHz ultrasonography. This ultrasonographic sign appears to be correlated with the height of the tumor. Thus, we believe UH estimation by 20 MHz ultrasonography could be used as a significant predictive factor for SCMT growth.

“…81 The risk factors include symptoms at the time of diagnosis of UM, acoustic shadow on ultrasound, nevus height > 1.5 mm, and a basal diameter > 8 mm. 82 The mean serum level of this group of patients was 89.56 ng/mL compared to 37.39 ng/mL for the nevus group without associated risk factors and 32.98 ng/mL for the control group. 83 This indicates that DJ-1 could be a potential marker of malignant transformation of choroid nevi.…”

“…In these nine cases, thickness was assumed not to exceed 0.5 mm. 26 In the DFUM group of patients, eight patients were treated with brachytherapy using I-125 and three patients by primary enucleation. These patients were treated at a minimum of 10 years before blood collection.…”

“…Precise lesion description is essential in humans as small choroidal melanomas may mimic benign nevi on fundoscopy. Options for lesion evaluation include ocular ultrasound 17 , computed tomography, and MRI. 1 Additionally, advanced retinal imaging including optical coherence tomography and various methods of angiography are used for this purpose 18 A mnemonic exists to help with differentiation of choroidal melanomas from nevi in physician-based medicine: TFSOM-UHHD (To Find Small Ocular Melanoma Using Helpful Hints Daily).…”
