Detecting Small Size and Minimal Thermal Signature Targets in Infrared Imagery Using Biologically Inspired Vision

Abstract: Thermal infrared imaging provides an effective sensing modality for detecting small moving objects at long range. Typical challenges that limit the efficiency and robustness of the detection performance include sensor noise, minimal target contrast and cluttered backgrounds. These issues become more challenging when the targets are of small physical size and present minimal thermal signatures. In this paper, we experimentally show that a four-stage biologically inspired vision (BIV) model of the flying insect … Show more

After linear transformation, histogram equalization is used to further process the image to enhance its overall contrast [19], making the image clearer and more conducive to subsequent target recognition. “…Inspired by the human eyes, 5 we propose a bionic visual reconnaissance method on UAV platform combaning three cameras, namely "Wide-Field", "Long-Focus", and "Infrared" cameras. The wide-field camera simulates the peripheral vision of the human eye, the long-focus camera simulates the human eye gaze, and the infrared camera ensures the robustness of the system in the degraded visual environment (DVE), which enable the reconnaissance UAV to have the ability of wide area target search, small target focus recognition, and broad-spectrum environment adaptation.…”

“…Therefore, the detection of UAVs is a pressing problem today, especially for non cooperative UAVs. Infrared imaging technology provides an important and effective way for remote detection of small moving targets [1] [2]. Small target detection in IRST system has always been a challenging problem for many reasons: (a) Due to the long imaging distance, the target occupies only a few pixels in the infrared image, and This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 62002372 and Grant 62001478, Shanghai Aerospace Science and Technology Innovation Fund, and CARDC Fundamental and Frontier Technology Research Fund.…”
