Abstract:<p>Tectonic, climatic, and anthropogenic forcing generate sediment flux signals that propagate across the Earth&#8217;s surface. Some of these signals get stored in strata but autogenic processes present in the Earth surface active layer can shred (i.e. degrade) and obscure many signals of environmental change prior to stratigraphic storage. In a landmark paper, Jerolmack and Paola (2010) use a numerical rice pile to show that autogenic events in the system saturate at a timescale <… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
