Detecting changes in tree health and productivity of silver fir in Slovenia

Abstract: Cambial electrical resistance (CER) was used as an objective measure of vitality of silver fir (Abies alba) in the forests of Slovenia. Trees were rated during the growing season by CER and a subjective crown status index (CSI). Both CER and CSI were inversely correlated to annual ring width increment. Using both CER and CSI, fir were assigned to vitality and vigour categories. Inferences made from these categories and radial growth trends indicated that ring growth decreased prior to the development of canopy… Show more

“…salzmannii trees, subjected to xeric conditions in south-eastern Spain forests, were mostly negative over the past century (Linares and Tíscar 2010). Declining Slovenian silver firs showed also decreasing growth trends for about 50 years (Torelli et al 1999;. The growth curves of dead and living Scots pine trees at three different sites in the Swiss Valais started to diverge between 10 and 20 years prior to death (Bigler et al 2006).…”

Reduced wood formation often occurs prior to visual symptoms of crown decline (Torelli et al, 1986(Torelli et al, , 1999, which highlights the usefulness of assessment of a tree's current mortality risk based on growth patterns and a derived statistical mortality model that clearly identifies trees at high risk of dying .…”

“…The trees belonged to a population of 269 mature trees monitored from 1987 to 2007. The health condition of the trees was assessed by determining the crown status index based on progressive needle loss and cambial electrical resistance (CER) (Torelli et al, 1999). Trees were assigned to 3 categories: A -trees with a full crown and productive cambium; B -trees with intermediate characteristics and C -trees with a sparse crown and suppressed cambium (Fig.…”

“…Cambial ER (with a Shigometer) as an objective measure of the vitality of silver fir (Abies alba Mill. ), and a decrease in the radial ring growth could be detected as an increase in the cambial ER (Torelli et al 1999). There was a relationship between tree vigor and the fire history of trees (whether or not they had been burned in the past), and the ER was used as an index of the general metabolic activity of the Caribbean pine (Pinus caribaea Morelet) (Paysen et al 2006).…”
