We investigate the synchronization transition of the Shinomoto-Kuramoto model on networks of the fruit-fly and two large human connectomes. This model contains a force term, thus is capable of describing critical behavior in the presence of external excitation. By numerical solution we determine the crackling noise durations with and without thermal noise and show extended non-universal scaling tails characterized by 2 < τt < 2.8, in contrast with the Hopf transition of the Kuramoto model, without the force τt = 3.1(1). Comparing the phase and frequency order parameters we find different transition points and fluctuations peaks as in case of the Kuramoto model. Using the local order parameter values we also determine the Hurst (phase) and β (frequency) exponents and compare them with recent experimental results obtained by fMRI. We show that these exponents, characterizing the auto-correlations are smaller in the excited system than in the resting state and exhibit module dependence.

The oxytocin effects on large-scale brain networks such as Default Mode Network (DMN) and Frontoparietal Network (FPN) have been largely studied using fMRI data. However, those studies are mainly based on the statistical correlation or bayesian causality inference, lacking physical and neuroscience level interpretability. Here, we propose a Kuramoto model physical-based framework to investigate oxytocin effects on the phase dynamical neural coupling in DMN and FPN. Tested on fMRI data from 59 participants administrated with either oxytocin or placebo, we demonstrate that oxytocin changes the topology of brain communities in DMN and FPN, leading to higher synchronization in the DMN and lower synchronization in the FPN, as well as a higher variance of the coupling strength within the DMN and more flexible coupling patterns across time. These results together imply that oxytocin may increase the capability to overcome the dispersion of corresponding intrinsic oscillations and yield flexibility in neural synchrony under various social contexts, providing new evidence to account for oxytocin modulated social behaviors. Our proposed Kuramoto model-based framework can be a potential tool in network neuroscience and offers physical and neural insights into phase dynamics in the brain.

O cérebro humano pode ser considerado uma rede complexa, pois é dividido em regiões estruturais e funcionais que são interconectadas. A conectividade funcional tem sido usada para modelar regiões do cérebro que podem estar fisicamente (ou anatomicamente) separadas, através de dependência temporal dos padrões de ativação neural. Uma tarefa importante na aprendizagem não supervisionada é a detecção de comunidades em redes (SILVA; ZHAO, 2016). Embora muitas técnicas de detecção de comunidade tenham sido propostas, ainda existem alguns problemas, como detecção de comunidade desbalanceada e baixa eficiência. Encontrar estruturas comunitárias em redes é um campo que vem despertando atenção de diversas áreas de estudo. A neurociência inclui um interesse neste estudo, em que comunidades em redes cerebrais apresentam fatores consideráveis no desenvolvimento e na funcionalidade do cérebro, favorável à realização de análises de estruturas de comunidades em várias escalas. A teoria das redes complexas tem sido um mecanismo útil para o estudo do cérebro devido à sua possibilidade de lidar com sistemas que possuem propriedades de alta complexidade. Neste contexto, a teoria de redes complexas junto às técnicas de Imagem por Ressonância Magnética Funcional (do inglês fMRI -Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) são utilizadas para criar e mapear a rede cerebral. Foram analisados os padrões de conectividade da rede cerebral através de detecção de comunidades. Especificamente, propomos uma técnica de detecção de comunidade inspirada na propagação sequencial de sinais do modelo de competição de partículas e a propagação paralela inspirada nos Mapas Auto-Organizáveis (do inglês Self-Organizing Map -SOM ). O modelo apresenta duas características salientes: 1) Ele pode detectar comunidades desbalanceadas; 2) É mais eficiente do que o modelo original de competição de partículas devido à introdução da propagação paralela. Nossos resultados demonstram uma alta precisão de detecção dos módulos em redes, além disso, é útil para encontrar comunidades desbalanceadas. Também se mostrou um método eficaz na caracterização de comunidades em redes cerebrais.
