The repeated use of herbicides with the same mode of action maybe has led to buildup of resistant late watergrass (Echinochloa phyllopogon (Stapf) Stapf ex Kossenko) populations. Thus, pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the level of penoxsulam-and bispyribac-resistance in seven late watergrass biotypes collected from water-seeded rice fields in Greece. Their susceptibility to imazamox and profoxydim was also studied. Furthermore, the efficacy of various herbicide combinations against the resistant late watergrass biotypes, as well as on rice sedge (Cyperus difformis L.) were evaluated in four field experiments. In pot experiment, two biotypes were resistant to both herbicides, while three biotypes were moderately resistant to penoxsulam with one of these simultaneously resistant to bispyribac. Four biotypes were also cross-resistant to imazamox, while all biotypes were susceptible to profoxydim. In field experiments, the double applications of penoxsulam or bispyribac applied at 18 d after seeding (DAS) followed by profoxydim plus halosulfuron at 35 DAS constantly provided the greatest rice yield and satisfactory control of both weeds. Conclusively, late watergrass resistant to penoxsulam and bispyribac biotypes have been built. In particular, rates up to 8 times the recommended rate did not provide acceptable weed control. Effective control of these biotypes and high rice yield can be achieved by double applications of herbicides with different modes of action (penoxsulam or bispyribac until the third leaf of rice [18 DAS] followed by profoxydim at seven-to eight-leaves growth stage [35 DAS]). Simultaneous control of late emerged rice sedge can be achieved by the addition of halosulfuron in the tank-mix with profoxydim.

This work aimed to evaluate the genetic and morphological diversity of 62 biotypes of Echinochloa oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch.(early watergrass) that are resistant to ALS-inhibitor herbicides (bispyribac-sodium and penoxsulam), using the single sequence repeat (SSR) marker system. To determine the morphological diversity, the weed was grown (five seeds from each population) under screenhouse conditions and morphological characteristics were recorded. Parameter values subjected to a hierarchical clustering analysis showed significant variation among the populations. The genetic variation among populations was determined using the 5′-SSR primer. Populations were classified into two main groups according to the results obtained from the SSR alleles. The allele numbers ranged between 2-6 per locus, the diversity values ranged between 0.27-0.99. The morphological and molecular analyses revealed differences in terms of several quantitative characteristics among the populations examined. Similarities were also found among different E. oryzoides populations grown in different regions in terms of their morphological characteristics, the genetic diversity was found to be higher. There is a potential for the spread of resistance through gene flow owing to high genetic diversity and low differentiation among population of E. oryzoides. Under such situations to prevent further resistance spread, early watergrass management in this area should focus both on reducing seed movement among rice fields and the field management practices such as implementation of crop rotation, use of herbicides with new mode of actions or cultural methods.

BACKGROUND: Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa spp.) is a global weed in rice fields. Quinclorac is commonly used to control barnyardgrass. However, due to persistent use, quinclorac resistance has evolved. We obtained quinclorac-susceptible (QS) and-resistant (QR1, QR2) lines from the progeny of a single resistant E. crus-pavonis for a resistance mechanism study. RESULTS: Line QR1 exhibited resistance to high quinclorac rates (up to 6400 g ha −1), whereas line QR2 exhibited a resistance/ susceptibility segregation ratio of 3:1 at the field or lower rates (400, 100 g ha −1). Intriguingly, a lower level of 14 C-quinclorac metabolism and hence a higher level of 14 C-quinclorac translocation was observed in QR1 than QS plants. The basal expression levels of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) synthase (ACS) and ACC oxidase 2 (ACO2) genes did not differ significantly between the QR1 and QS lines. However, more expression of ACS and ACO genes was induced by quinclorac treatment in QS than in QR1. Basal levels of ⊎-cyanoalanine synthase (⊎-CAS) gene expression were similar in QS and QR1 plants, but a greater level of down-regulation was detected in QS than in QR1 plants after quinclorac treatment. CONCLUSION: These results indicate QR plants are less responsive to quinclorac than QS plants in terms of up-regulating quinclorac metabolism and ethylene synthesis. Resistance in this E. crus-pavonis line is likely controlled by a single major gene, involving possibly an alteration in auxin signal perception/transduction to the ethylene biosynthesis pathway. The ⊎-CAS is unlikely to play a major role in quinclorac resistance in this particular population.
