Detectability of smart proppants traced with gadolinium and samarium in the Vaca Muerta formation

Abstract: The use of traceable samarium-based proppants was confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations.• Realistic borehole-formation-tool models with and without proppants were studied.• A minimum samarium oxide concentration of 1.25 % wt. is needed to be detected.
