Detectability comparison of simulated tumors in digital breast tomosynthesis using high-energy X-ray inline phase sensitive and commercial imaging systems

Abstract: This study compared the detectability of simulated tumors using a high-energy X-ray inline phase sensitive digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) prototype and a commercial attenuation-based DBT system. Each system imaged a 5-cm thick modular breast phantom with 50-50 adipose-glandular percentage density containing contrast-detail (CD) test objects to simulate different tumor sizes. A commercial DBT system acquired 15 projection views over 15 degrees (15d-15p) was used to acquire the attenuation-based projection v… Show more

“…Our long-term aim is the development of physical breast phantoms dedicated to studying x-ray imaging of the breast, including advanced techniques such as breast CT, phase-contrast and dual-energy imaging. These techniques are implemented at higher photon energies compared to the mammography x-ray imaging (Bisogni et al 2007, Lindfors et al 2008, Zhao et al 2012, Sarno et al 2016, Ghani et al 2017, 2018. To successfully design and manufacture such phantoms the properties of the available printing materials need to be investigated.…”

“…Phase-contrast imaging has shown its value in the preclinical imaging studies, and there has been a rapid acceleration over the past few years towards its clinical implementation [7,9,[42][43][44][45]. Experimentally, the in-line phase sensitive imaging is the most straightforward technique to implement.…”

“…One of the single distance phase retrieval methods which is based on the phase attenuation duality principle (PAD), is well suited for clinical imaging 24–26 . The PAD‐based method has been applied in various studies to generate and evaluate phase sensitive images 27–33 . The details of the PAD‐based retrieval method can be found in the (SI).…”
