Bluetongue virus (BTV) is an arbovirus that is transmitted between domestic and wild ruminants by Culicoides spp. Its worldwide distribution depends on competent vectors and suitable environmental ecosystems that are becoming affected by climate change. Therefore, we evaluated whether climate change would influence the potential distribution and ecological niche of BTV and Culicoides insignis in Peru. Here, we analyzed BTV (n = 145) and C. insignis (n = 22) occurrence records under two shared socioeconomic pathway scenarios (SSP126 and SSP585) with five primary general circulation models (GCMs) using the kuenm R package v.1.1.9. Then, we obtained binary presence–absence maps and represented the risk of transmission of BTV and niche overlapping. The niche model approach showed that north and east Peru presented suitability in the current climate scenario and they would have a decreased risk of BTV, whilst its vector would be stable and expand with high agreement for the five GCMs. In addition, its niche overlap showed that the two niches almost overlap at present and would completely overlap with one another in future climate scenarios. These findings might be used to determine the areas of highest priority for entomological and virological investigations and surveillance in order to control and prevent bluetongue infections in Peru.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue detectar anticuerpos contra el virus de lengua azul (VLA) en una población de ovinos de raza Junín criados a 3800 msnm en la provincia de Jauja, Junín, y en ovinos de raza Blackbelly criados a 600 msnm en la provincia de Chanchamayo, Junín, Perú. Se colectaron 306 muestras de sangre de ovinos Junín, mayores a 4 meses de edad, ambos sexos y 82 muestras de ovinos Blackbelly, mayores a 4 meses, ambos sexos, de pequeños criadores de cuatro distritos (Perene, San Luis de Shauro, San Ramón y Pichanaki) de la provincia de Chanchamayo, Junín. La detección de anticuerpos contra el VLA se hizo mediante la prueba de ELISA de competición. El 100% (306/306) de las muestras de los ovinos Junín resultaron negativos a anticuerpos contra el VLA, mientras que 56.1% (46/82) de las muestras de ovinos Blackbelly tuvieron anticuerpos contra el virus. La ausencia de anticuerpos contra el VLA en ovinos criados a 3800 msnm indica que no fueron expuestos al VLA, sugiriendo que la altitud y bajas temperaturas constituyen una barrea para la biología del vector transmisor del virus, en tanto que los ovinos criados a 600 msnm estuvieron expuestos, indicando la presencia del vector o vectores competentes para la transmisión del virus de lengua azul.

Bluetongue virus (BTV) is a global infection primarily transmitted among domestic and wild ruminant populations through Culicoides spp. midges. Infection is highly prevalent across temperate and tropical regions; however, significant changes in the global distribution of BTV have been observed in recent years. We aimed to evaluate the national BTV seroprevalence and its risk factors among domestic ruminants (cattle, sheep and goats) in Peru. Ruminant sera (cattle= 3 452, sheep= 2 786 and goats=1 568) were collected using a random, two-stage clustering method and analyzed by c-ELISA. The national BTV seroprevalence was 12.7% (95% CI: 11.00-14.63%) and the seropositivity rate for each species was 19.29% (95% CI: 16.0%–31.1%) in cattle, 8.4 (95% CI: 6.6%–10.5%) in sheep, and 9.2% (95% CI: 5.6%–14.8%) in goats. Bivariate and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate risk factors for BTV seropositivity and to estimate Odds Ratios (OR) with 95% CI. We found that age, altitude, and maximum temperature were identified as crucial factors influencing the prevalence of BTV seroprevalence in cattle, sheep and goats. Older animals, particularly cattle and goats between 6 and 24 months and above 24 months, exhibited a significantly higher likelihood of BTV infection. Additionally, higher altitudes above 3000 masl played a protective role, reducing the risk of BTV transmission. Furthermore, increased maximum temperatures, especially exceeding 30 °C, were associated with a greater prevalence of BTV. This study lays the groundwork for identifying BTV serotypes and Culicoides spp. in different regions, including altitudes above 3000 masl, to enhance BTV surveillance in Peru.
