Detangling ecosystem services: Open‐field manipulation of soil‐dwelling microarthropods provides new opportunities to investigate their effects on nitrogen cycling

Abstract: 1. Soil microarthropods have a pivotal role in soil nitrogen cycling in that they affect microbial decomposers. A high abundance of microarthropods may increase the mobility of inorganic nitrogen ions in the soil, mainly in nitrogen-limited habitats. However, it is difficult to study ecological processes with small-sized, soil-4.06 ± 0.93 3.52 ± 0.34 2.70 ± 0.76 4.30 ± 0.59Abbreviation: SIR, substrate-induced respiration.

“…These disturbances may homogenize ecosystems compared to native vegetation, where niche diversification is more pronounced. The shift towards intensified sugarcane cultivation and extensive grazing may negatively impact the diversity and uniformity of soil invertebrate communities, potentially compromising essential ecosystem services such as nitrogen cycling (Gergoćs et al, 2022), decomposition, nutrient cycling, and soil formation, thereby facilitating water supply and regulating local erosion and climate (Lavelle et al, 2006;Barrios, 2007;George et al, 2017).…”

“…For example, soil arthropods contribute to litter decomposition by increasing microbial activity and abundance (Culliney, 2013 ; Hou et al., 2024 ; Li et al., 2021 ; Soong et al., 2016 ). The presence of soil arthropods can lead to increased microbial respiration and concentrations of nutrients such as nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate (Gergócs et al., 2022 ; Sagi & Hawlena, 2021 ; Teuben & Roelofsma, 1990 ). Arthropods such as springtails (Collembola) can affect nitrogen cycling, nitrogen uptake by plants, and microbial abundance, although this varies substantially across cropping systems and fertilization treatments (Gergócs et al., 2022 ).…”

“…We therefore expected that this procedure would have depleted and inactivated soil fauna, which would have led to similar populations at the beginning of the experiment. We refrained from defaunating the soils by freezing, heating, microwaving, or chemical treatment, as these methods also have side effects on various soil parameters [60,61].…”
