Detailed measurements of the static pressure characteristics around the centrifugal compressor casing wall

Abstract: The non-axisymmetric geometry structure of the volute leads to the uneven circumferential distribution of the flow field inside centrifugal compressors. It is difficult to describe the whole flow field for few measuring points installed around the centrifugal compressor casing wall. In this paper, seventy-two static pressure measuring probes including the six circumferential position and the twelve meridional position were installed around the casing wall, and the circumferential distribution of the static pre… Show more

“…The straight and bent inlet pipe compressors on the experimental bench are shown in Figures 6 and 7, respectively. More detail describing the experimental method can be found in Yang et al 22 Both the performance and static pressure measuring experiments were carried out at three rotational speeds: 60 k r/min, 70 k r/min, and 80 k r/min, respectively. The schematic layout of the test rig is shown in Figure 8.…”

“…[11][12][13] The distribution of non-uniform flow field in the compressor can be reflected by evenly arranging static pressure probes in the circumferential direction to measure the static pressure distribution on the casing wall of the compressor. For a centrifugal compressor with volute applied in automobile turbocharger, Yang and Zhang [14][15][16] analyzed the casing-wall static pressure distribution under different rotational speeds and different operating conditions through experiments and calculations to understand its stall mechanism. An interesting phenomenon was observed.…”

“…Under the action of the volute, the circumferential flow nonuniformities in a centrifugal compressor existed in the entire flow range [28][29][30] and more near the choke. As the compressor was throttled from the near choke to design condition, the nonuniformity in the circumferential distribution of static pressure decreased gradually.…”
