Detailed head localization and incidence of skin cancers

Abstract: Skin cancers are the most common neoplasms; frequently, they localize on the face. The aim of paper is to present the incidence of skin tumors in a single center from 2017 to 2019, describe trends in its frequency and find relations between neoplasms and sex, type of cancer, and its size. An analysis of histopathological files from the surgical department between 2017 and 2019 was calculated. These items were selected: sex, age, type of skin cancer, subtype of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), grading of squamous ce… Show more

“…NMSCs are generally curable and rarely result in death or metastatic disease but can be locally destructive when treatment is inadequate or delayed. In contrast, CM, which encompasses only 1% of skin cancers, is the most life-threatening skin tumor, accounting for about 90% of skin-cancer-associated deaths [ 4 ]. According to the most recent GLOBOCAN estimates, there were more than 320,000 new cases of CM worldwide in 2020, which resulted in 57,000 deaths and about 1.2 million new cases of NMSC [ 5 ].…”

“…Both neoplasms are derived from epidermal keratinocytes but diverge along distinct oncogenic pathways, leading to two phenotypically distinct cancers [ 3 ]. KCs account for 95% of malignant skin tumors [ 4 ]. Melanoma of the skin comprises only 1% of all skin cancers but it is responsible for approximately 90% of deaths associated with cutaneous tumors [ 4 ].…”

“…Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cancer in Caucasians, representing about 85% of non-melanoma skin cancers [ 1 , 2 ]. BCC appears on sun-exposed parts of the body, especially on the skin of the face and on the nose area [ 3 , 4 ]. The main risk factors for BCC development include ultraviolet light (UV) exposure, light skin type, long-term immunosuppression, male sex, advanced age, and certain genodermatoses [ 5 ].…”
