Detachment Detection in Cam Follower System Due to Nonlinear Dynamics Phenomenon

Abstract: The detachment between the cam and the follower was investigated for different cam speeds (N) and different internal distance of the follower guide from inside (I.D.). The detachment between the cam and the follower were detected using largest Lyapunov exponent parameter, power density function of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and Poincare’ maps due to the nonlinear dynamics phenomenon of the follower. The follower displacement and the contact force between the cam and the follower were used in the detection o… Show more

“…They can be understood as transformation mechanisms that convert the rotational motion of a driver component (cam) into a desired oscillating motion of another body (follower) by direct contact. Many fields of application can be found in the literature [25][26][27][28], from heavy to lightweight machines:…”

“…The complete toolchain is demonstrated on an industrially relevant conjugate camfollower drivetrain. Cam-follower mechanisms are widely used in industry in many types of applications [25][26][27][28] because of their peculiar properties of transforming a given input motion into a desired one in the output. Many different types of cam designs have been studied in the literature depending on the application and requirements [29].…”

“…Due to the nonlinear dynamics phenomenon, the largest Lyapunov exponent, the power spectrum of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Poincare' map are discussed by Yousuf to investigate the detachment between the cam and the follower. The response of the follower is calculated at different coefficients of restitution, different cam speeds, and different follower Guides' clearaances [2]. By taking into consideration the coefficient of restitution, Sundar et al analyzed the model of nonlinear contact damping and contact stiffness of single degree of freedom system [3].…”

Nonlinear response of the follower displacement is calculated at different cam speeds, different coefficient of restitution, different contact conditions, and different internal distance of the follower guide from inside [2,3]. Flores et al used a nonsmooth dynamics approach to model the interaction of the colliding bodies using Coulomb's law for dry friction [4].…”
