Desulfurization of Kerosene by the Electrochemical Oxidation and Extraction Process

Abstract: To meet the environmental requirements, kerosene, as the major component of jet fuel, is necessary for deep desulfurization. An electrochemical oxidation−extraction method was proposed to reduce the sulfur content in kerosene in this work. First, the electrochemical oxidation of kerosene was carried out in NaCl solution. Then, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) was used as an extractant to remove the oxidized organic sulfides. Gas chromatography−flame photometric detector (GC−FPD), gas chromatography−mass spectromet… Show more

“…In addition, HDS is difficult to remove heterocyclic organosulfur such as benzothiophene (BT), dibenzothiophene (DBT) and their derivatives. Due to these reasons, many groups [7][8][9][10] have been engaged in the exploitation of non-HDS technologies for transportation fuels, including extraction [11][12] , oxidation [13][14] , adsorption [15][16] , biological desulfurization [17][18] and others [19][20] .…”

“…During the electrochemical oxidation under optimized working conditions, sulfur aromatic compounds and their derivatives are easily oxidized to the corresponding sulfoxides and sulfones by direct electron transfer. These oxidized products can be subsequently removed by liquid-liquid extraction or adsorption techniques [21][22][23][24]. Simultaneously, ROS can also be produced from water electro-oxidation using anodes having different compositions, morphologies and structural properties [25][26][27][28].…”

“…Besides, carbonchlorine bond was also observed aer electrochemical oxidation, this is because a part of organic suldes which with weak reductive (such as mercaptans) can react with ClO À and Cl 2 to sulfonyl chloride compounds. 39 The GC-FPD chromatograms of raw and oxidized condensate gasoline aer NMP extraction were presented in Fig. 6.…”
