Desulfurization of Diesel Fuels by Adsorption via π-Complexation with Vapor-Phase Exchanged Cu(I)−Y Zeolites

Abstract: Desulfurization of a commercial diesel fuel by vapor-phase ion exchange (VPIE) copper(I) faujasite zeolites was studied in a fixed-bed adsorber operated at ambient temperature and pressure. The zeolite adsorbed approximately five thiophenic molecules per unit cell. After treating 18 cm3 of fuel, the cumulative average sulfur concentration detected was 0.032 ppmw-S. GC-FPD results showed that the pi-complexation sorbents selectively adsorbed highly substituted thiophenes, benzothiophenes, and dibenzothiophenes … Show more

“…More details on the GC analysis could be found elsewhere. [12][13][14][15][16] For standards, stock solutions consisting of benzothiophene (BT) and 2-methylbenzothiophene (MBT) in sulfur-free n-octane were further diluted sequentially to known concentrations and then injected for elution time determination.…”

“…The commonly used catalysts are the sulfide Co-Mo/ Al 2 O 3 or Ni-Mo/Al 2 O 3 catalysts [11]. It has been shown that substituted dibenzothiophene (DBT) species are less reactive because of the presence of the methyl groups that create steric hindrance during the interaction of sulfur with catalysts' active sites [12].…”

“…On the other hand, silver ion can create p complex with thiophene by p-type bonds. Agzeolite has high adsorption of thiophene because of thiophene as a soft base related to Ag as a soft acid (Ma et al 2005;Hernandez-Maldonado and Yang 2004;Yang and Hernandez-Maldonado 2003;Hernández-Maldonado and Yang 2003;Gong et al 2009;Laborde-Boutet et al 2006;Qin et al 2014). …”
