Desulfurization of Dibenzothiophene, Benzothiophene, and Other Thiophene Analogs by a Newly Isolated Bacterium, Gordonia alkanivorans Strain 1B

Abstract: A novel bacterium, Gordonia alkanivorans strain 1B, was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. Assessment of the biodegradation of distinct organic sulfur-compounds, such as dibenzothiophene (DBT), benzothiophene (BT), DBT sulfone, and alkylated tiophenic compounds, as the sole source of sulfur was investigated. G. alkanivorans strain 1B was able to remove selectively the sulfur from DBT while keeping intact the remaining carbon-carbon structure. Orthophenyl phenol (2-hydroxybiphenyl) was the only detect… Show more

“…The production of DBT desulfurizing enzymes has been shown to be inhibited by inorganic sulfate (Alves et al, 2005;Gunam et al, 2006;Lee et al, 1995;Li et al, 1996;Mohebali et al, 2007a;Noda et al, 2002;Ohshiro et al, 1996b;Rhee et al, 1998;Wang & Krawiec, 1996). No radiolabelled sulfite was produced in incubations of sulfate-grown R. erythropolis IGTS8 resting cells with […”

“…Bacterial strain and growth conditions G. alkanivorans strain 1B was previously isolated in our laboratory from oil-contaminated soil [2]. This bacterium was cultured in sulfur-free mineral (SFM) medium supplemented with a trace element solution as described by Alves et al [1].…”

“…Dry cell weight (DCW) was determined using 0.22 m cellulose acetate membranes after 18 h at 100°C. The determination of the organic compounds involved in desulfurization was performed as described by Alves et al [2]. In all GC measurements, anthracene was used as an internal standard to minimize the variation.…”

“…There has been successful breakthrough in the use of biodesulfurization in the past 20 years. The first investigations were reported in the between 1950's and 1960's [114,115]. BDS removes the recalcitrant sulphur compounds that HDS cannot remove at low operating conditions of temperature and pressure.…”
