Destination recovery during COVID-19 in an emerging economy: Insights from Perú

Abstract: The onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a critical impact on the travel and tourism sector. Tourist destinations in developing countries are even more susceptible to negative trends of this sort due to the importance of tourism in emerging economies and the peculiarities of their infrastructures and healthcare systems. In such a context, the research develops a Partial Least Square (PLS) path modelling to analyze the impact of destination image and perceived health safety on perceived destination qualit… Show more

“…The review identified recurrent theories and conceptual frameworks under which the hypotheses were developed. Examples of some well-known theories employed are Mehrabian and Russell’s (1974) stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) in Koç et al (2022) , Majeed et al (2022) , and Nie et al (2022) , Rogers’ (1975) protection motivation theory (PMT) in Rather (2021) and Cambra-Fierro et al (2022) , or Ajzen’s (1991) theory of planned behavior (TPB) in Torabi et al (2022) , adding to the integration of research findings with higher-level theoretical explanations ( Hunt, 2010 ).…”

“…Since the start of the pandemic, multiple studies have been implemented to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the labor market; however they have not focused on gender analysis (Cambra-Fierro et al, 2022;Cueva et al, 2021;Higa et al, 2022). Most of these studies have found in common negative effects on employment (worked hours and income), which may become persistent in the medium term (Higa et al, 2022), affecting mainly sectors such as travel and tourism because immobility restrictions implemented to mitigate COVID-19 infections.…”

“…This study aims at identifying the impact of the confinement measures during the COVID-19 pandemic on female and male employment in Peru from 2019-2021 (first quaterly). Differently than other related studies (Cambra-Fierro et al, 2022;Castellares & Huarancca, 2021;Cueva, Del Carpio, & Winkler, 2021;Higa, Ospino, & Aragon, 2022;Salas, 2021), we use the National Household Surveys (ENAHO) to investigate not only average effects on employment outcomes during the mandated economic recovery phases implemented during this period in the country, but also to investigate the role of remote and essential work on those outcomes.…”

“…The effect of the COVID-19 epidemic on the travel and tourist industry has been devastating. Due to the significance of tourism in rising economies and the uniqueness of their infrastructures and healthcare systems, tourist sites in developing nations are much more vulnerable to unfavourable trends (Cambra-Fierro et al, 2022) During the recession, offline micro businesses (OMB) activity in China dropped immediately and dramatically by 50 per cent. Seven weeks following the COVID-19 outbreak, the businesses had recovered to around 80 per cent of their pre-outbreak levels and maintained at this level until the end of our time frame (Guo et al, 2022).…”
