Dess‐Martin Periodinane Oxidation

Abstract

The conversion of primary and secondary alcohols into carbonyl compounds by means of the oxidation with a hypervalent iodine compound is generally known as the Dess–Martin periodinane oxidation or simply referred to as the Dess–Martin oxidation. This oxidation has been found suitable for the oxidation of substrates containing sensitive functionalities. The reaction has been carried out in different solvents and it has been found that the oxidation of alcohols using DMP is faster in ionic liquids than in conventional solvents and gives suitable yields with high selectivity. Other hypervalent iodine compounds have also been used as oxidants, such as o ‐iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX).
